What is BitTorrent?

BitTorrent is a protocol designed for transferring files. It is peer-to-peer in nature, as users connect to each other directly to send and receive portions of the file. However, there is a central server (called a tracker) which coordinates the action of all such peers. The tracker only manages connections, it does not have any knowledge of the contents of the files being distributed, and therefore a large number of users can be supported with relatively limited tracker bandwidth. The key philosophy of BitTorrent is that users should upload (transmit outbound) at the same time they are downloading (receiving inbound.) In this manner, network bandwidth is utilized as efficiently as possible. BitTorrent is designed to work better as the number of people interested in a certain file increases, in contrast to other file transfer protocols.

What is myBittorrent.com?

myBittorrent is one of the biggest torrent search engine and index on the Internet. Over here you will be able to download all kinds of torrents from Linux Distros to documentaries. We have it all! We started in February 2005 as an alternative to the (at that time very popular) SuprNova, which went offline at the end of 2004 due to legal issues. Our goal is to provide an easy-to-use index and search engine for all kinds of torrent files.

How do I use BitTorrent to download files?

To be able to download something of interest via BitTorrent, you will first need a BitTorrent client. Torrents are small data files that will tell the BitTorrent client where to download the files of interest from. Once you have a BitTorrent client like uTorrent installed, return to myBittorrent.com, click on the torrent you want to download and then look for the "Download via BitTorrent"-button. After clicking that button, the download will automatically begin from within the BitTorrent client.

What are trackers?

A tracker is a server that keeps track of the people, called peers, that are sharing the file(s) specified in a torrent. BitTorrent clients connect to these trackers to obtain a list of peers to which the client then connects to to obtain the various pieces of the file(s) specified in the torrent.

What are seeds & leechers?

Seeds and leechers are the two types of peers that can be connected to a torrent.
Seeds are the clients that have 100% of the data specified in a torrent. As long as the client doesn't have a complete copy of the data of the torrent, it's called a leecher.
There has been a lot of confusion in the BitTorrent community about the word 'leecher'. Within the community, this word is also used to refer to a person who downloads data, but never uploads in return. These people often get banned from trackers, making it impossible for them to download torrents that use those trackers.

How do I upload torrents?

myBittorrent does currently not allow any torrent uploads by its visitors.
If you however have a whole bunch of torrents that you want uploaded on the site and would like to close a deal with myBittorrent.com, then please contact us.

Misc questions

How long are torrents kept in the database?

We regularly check if a torrent is "alive". This means that there is at least 1 seeder or leecher connected to a tracker to exchange the data of that torrent. When torrents "die", they get removed from the website, but are kept in the database for weeks for in case the torrent happens to come alive again. (This only happens rarely though.)

My torrent does not appear to be indexed by myBittorrent!

myBittorrent uses bots to search for torrents all over the web. By posting your torrent on one of the biggest BitTorrent sites of the web, there will be a high chance that the torrent will be found by our bots and added on our site.

Where are the adult torrents?

myBittorrent currently has no adult section, but will soon have one which will only be available for members of 18 years or older.

About Us

Why did you create this site?

As a service for our former site BitTorrent Portal (BTP) we wanted to offer a torrent search engine which would not have the limitations that the biggest BitTorrent site at the time (SuprNova) had. Later on people from BTP started working on myBittorrent as it became a success. BTP was slowly being turned into myBittorrent until it eventually was closed down.

How can I contact you guys?

We got a nice contact form at our contact page.

I like your site. Can I send a donation?

We don't accept donations. Thank you for your consideration though.
